SUMMER SCHOOL OF VERTICAL DANCE AND SOMATIC LEARNING (2020)

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

The School of Vertical Dance and Somatic Learning is the name of the development program created by Marija Scekic, the Director of Histeria Nova Artistic Organization in Croatia. The program is divided into three program areas/modules:

  1. Residences of the Somatic Movement for International Dancers (Advanced) led by Marija Scekic. Master class education for international vertical professional dancers in the field of somatic dance and natural body movement (duration: 1-2 weeks). In three years, Marija Šćekić has brought together and educated more than 150 professional and amateur dancers from the EU and the world. The first such residency was held in September 2019 and three more will be held in 2020 for professional vertical dancers from the UK, Ecuador and France.
  2. Vertical Dance Summer School led by invited guest teachers and leading choreographers and professional vertical dance artists from Europe, Canada and the US (duration: 5 days).
  3. Artistic collaborations and international performances for the purpose of promoting vertical dance as a powerful promoter of the cultural and natural heritage of the Republic of Croatia. This module represents the organizational, production and performance aspect of Histeria Nova's work on further development and promotion of innovative ideas and latest tendencies within the framework of Biennale of New Movement created by Marija Šćekić.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE

VERTICAL DANCE TECHNIQUE FOR BEGGINERS

09:00-11:00
Starting with a short daily introduction to the specific strengthening of the center of the body and the preparation for tying and getting acquainted with the equipment accessories, the participants will go through basic physical and spatial orientation and vocabulary, learning to jump as well as to connect the choreography.

VERTICAL DANCE TECHNIQUE FOR ADVANCED

16:00-18:00
In this class, advanced learners will work on putting up a wall with suggestions that will revise the basics of vertical dance, such as the notion of weight, space, controls, and momentum. It will develop suspensions, trajectories, take risks and learn sequences from Magalie Lanriot's dance repertoire.

CREATIVE WORKS FOR BEGGINERS & ADVANCED

18:00-20:00
Attendees will explore different dance sequences on the rope. Spatial relationships will be processed and potential in the air related to solos, duets and groups explored. Particular attention will be paid to the different qualities of movement, sensitivity and fluidity with wall dancing.

ABOUT THE TEACHER

Magalie Lanriot is a dancer, performer and teacher who teaches contemporary and aerial dance. It works in collaboration with the University of Lisbon, providing the formation and research of vertical and contemporary dance in Portugal. He currently resides in Lisbon, collaborating on the Armazém 13 Circus Project, where he undergoes training specifically focused on aerial dance.
She performed with "Gravity and Levity" in "Rites of War" – UK Tour 2014, created by Lindsey Butcher and Darshan Singh Bhuller. Magalie created her own company, L'Envers du Pied, in 2011, and choreographed solo and trapeze dance "Entre ... moi" by performing at numerous festivals, including: Les Festival Rencontres de la Danse Aerienne in La Baule, France (2012, 2013), Festivox in Bordeaux, France (2011), the Malaposta Festival, Portugal (2011), the Ficadance Évora Festival, Portugal (2011), the Almada Dance Festival, Portugal (2011), and the Festival of the Air Arts Center of Santa Barbara, USA (2014).
She is a teacher at Olga Roriz and works as an assistant on the F.O.R. Dance Theater. She has also lectured at the following festivals, schools and projects: European Air Dance Festival in the UK; Les Rencontres de la Danse Aerienne in La Baule, France; Janze Circus Schools in France and the Armazém 13 project from Lisbon.
