The Pythagoreans came to the conclusion that sounds are in direct proportion to the distances of
celestial bodies. The solar system, according to their understanding, consists of 10 planets
orbiting a central fire. They thought that each of these planets produced its own tone depending on
the distance from the quiet center in which the Earth is located. This is what we call the
Musica Mundiana or the music of the spheres. Closer spheres create deeper tones,
and further and faster spheres create more. The sound produced in this way is so rare that our
ordinary ears cannot hear it.
Zoran Šćekić, founder and artistic director of the MICROFEST
festival of microtonal music in Zagreb,
will talk more about this topic in a lecture and presentation entitled Music of Spheres.
