VERTICAL DISCOVERY (2021.)

This year's edition of the Summer School of Vertical Dance and Somatic Learning has brought three independent programs, held from 20th to 26th July 2021 to the City of Zadar. The program was organized by Histeria Nova with the support of the City of Zadar and the Histeria Nova School of Natural Movement.

PROGRAM

"The Fall" is a research project by Sarah Bruat (France), selected among twenty applications from around the world. Her idea of developing an idea of falling was researched and further developed on the roof of the Krešimir Ćosić Hall, in the early mornings and late evenings, and in close collaboration with Marija Šćekić. The purpose of the work and research was to prepare photographic, video and choreographic movement material for the "Little Prince" project, which is planned for realization during 2022/2023 as part of the project "Biennale of the New Movement" co-produced by Hysteria Nova (Croatia), Aeriosa Dance Society (Canada) and Jyskynna Dance Co from Cornwall (England).

The first vertical dance workshop for children gathered a group of kids who faced the fear of heights and tried out vertical movement steps from the perspective of "living upside down" which is a condition mostly and heavily experienced by all of us during this pandemic era. The workshop brought a lot of exciting experiences for parents and children eager for adventure and something, in the true sense of the word, "upside down". After the morning warm-up sessions and preparation of the body for the harness, the exploration of voltige and wall movement began. Through exercises, improvisations and fun games, interesting possibilities of movement were discovered. As a result, children were essentially introduced to joys, challenges, fears and the potentials of vertical dance as a new form of art in Republic of Croatia.

The workshop for adults gathered participants from Zagreb, Šibenik, Split, Đakovo and Varaždin. The workshop was divided into two aspects (vertical and somatic) so that it gives each participant the opportunity to perceive the vertical perspective as interior space full of subtle, deep movement where emotional and psychological experiences are visible to the viewer. Precisely in this aspect lies the innovativeness of the work by Histeria Nova as a dance company that does not experience the vertical dance as a form of visual but rather somatic/ visceral art form. Oval pillars, a released rope (voltige technique), a side wall for vertical walking were used for the work, and suspension sequences were "transferred" to the rehearsal studio of the School of Natural Movement on July 26th and into hands of Marija Šćekić who introduced participants with her animalis for vertical dancers training. Through exercises and improvisations, many interesting possibilities of movement were discovered and created a basis for further elaboration of the dance sequence in an authentic, somatic way of movement for further exploration during the year of 2022/2023.
